BOB KRAEMER

BOB KRAEMER

Class of 1968

Bob Kraemer (born May 31, 1950) is a former award-winning receiver who played in the Canadian Football League from 1971 to 1974.

Originally a receiver with the Sisler Spartans High School Football Team, Kraemer became quarterback of the University of Manitoba and was a member of the Bison's 1969 and 70 national championship teams, being named MVP in the 69 championship game. Kraemer joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1971 as a receiver and, with 39 receptions for 468 yards, was winner of the Dr. Beattie Martin Trophy for Canadian rookie of the year in the west. His best year was 1973, with 47 catches for 635 yards. He finished his career with 109 receptions for 1375 yards and 5 touchdowns, and as a (rare Canadian) quarterback, he completed 2 of 6 passes for 43 yards, both for touchdowns.

In 2017 Bob was inducted to the Manitoba Sports Hall Of Fame.
Bob Kraemer grew up playing sports in Winnipeg’s North End and carried his love of them throughout his life as a remarkable athlete. Having participated in a national championship in six different sports for both Manitoba (junior baseball, junior handball and university football) and his current home of British Columbia (racquetball, masters slo-pitch and senior golf), Kraemer truly fits the often cliché moniker of an all-round athlete.

Attending Sisler High School in the late 60s Kraemer excelled in track and field at the 220 and 440 yard distance. He set a provincial record in the 440. In his first year ever playing organized football in 1968, he played quarterback and helped lead his team to the city finals. He was named Sisler’s Male Athlete of the Year; his first of several such awards.

From 1968-70 he played shortstop for the Legion 141 in junior baseball. His play earned him an all-star nod and he was invited to join the Carman Goldeyes as one of only two pick-ups for the 1969 National junior championship. 1970 also saw him defeat the soon-to-be legendary Merv Deckert as Manitoba junior men’s handball champion. At the national level he lost in the first round to the eventual champion and won the consolation side.

But football was his best sport and his success both as an amateur and a CFL pro was remarkable over a relatively brief period of time. From 1968-70 Kraemer played QB for the University of Manitoba Bisons amassing a 24-3 win-loss record with a 5-1 play-off record. They won the province’s first College Bowl (now known as the Vanier Cup) in 1969 where Kraemer won the Teddy Morris trophy as MVP. The Bisons followed up with another national title in 1970. Kraemer was named U of MB Athlete of the Year in both years and was runner-up for the Hec Creighton trophy (most outstanding player in Canadian university football) as well. He was named Bison MVP and Western All-Star QB each of his three years. The MSSA named him 1969 Manitoba Male Athlete of the Year. From 1971-74 he played receiver for his hometown Blue Bombers winning the Dr. Beattie Martin trophy as the West’s top rookie in 1971. His best year as a pro came in 1973 when he was fifth in the CFL with 47 catches for 635 yards in just nine games. He also broke a team record with 11 catches in a single game vs. Hamilton.
