About COLUMBIA – Sondra Lewis Yates, 60, died at home Friday afternoon, April 24, 2009 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was born in Charleston, WV on September 5, 1948, to the late Adeline Falzitto Lewis and James G. Lewis. She is survived by her husband, Larry A. Yates; daughter and son-in-law, Paula M. and Burnie Flake of Lexington, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Paul F. and Rita Morris of South Point, OH; stepsons, Michael Goodwin and wife, Kristi of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Randy Goodwin of Mullins, SC and Dean Yates of Blythewood, SC and stepdaughter, Lynette Yates Wilson of Columbia, SC; brothers, Stanley Lewis and wife, Ann of Racine, WV, G. B. Lewis and wife, Christina of Scott Depot, WV and Jim Collins and wife, Marlene of Laurel, MD; grandchildren, Savannah Morris, Raeven Flake and Leland Rose Flake; step grandchildren, Michael Goodwin, Elli Grace Goodwin, Shannon Wilson and Devin Wilson; nephews, Brandon Lewis and Benjamin Lewis; niece, Annie Lewis and husband, Christopher.
She loved the Lord and was devoted to her children and especially to her grandchildren. She showed her love of her church’s choir, ministries and school by volunteering countless hours at the school and singing as many as four Masses each weekend. A Choral Scholarship will be established in her memory, honoring her faithful and loving service to the Music Ministry or St. Peter’s School, c/o St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1529 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday April 28, 2009 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with children’s and adult choirs singing the Requiem of Gabriel Faure with chamber orchestra. Committal will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.
