Class of 1958
Jerry Carlton president of the 1958 graduating class - This East End native starred in both basketball and baseball at the University of Arkansas after having been recognized as one of he top high school basketball players in the country at Sheridan. He was All-State in basketball in 1957 and 1958 and high school All-American in 1958 helping lead the Yellowjackets to a State Championship in 1958. After graduating from Sheridan High, he chose to attend the University of Arkansas on a basketball scholarship. As a Razorback, he led the baseball team in batting three times with averages of .341, .375, and .382. He was named All-Region as a shortstop. In basketball, he became only the second Razorback player to score more than 1,000 points and posted the highest field goal and free throw percentages to that point in Razorback history. Carlton's free throw percentage was fifth in the country as a junior and second nationally as a senior. He earned All-Southwest Conference honors in basketball following the 1961 and 1962 seasons and was named Honorable Mention All-American both years. He was drafted professionally by the St. Louis Hawks basketball club and the Cincinnati Reds baseball club. He played professionally with the Cincinnati Reds organization. Carlton was inducted into the University of Arkansas' Sports Hall of Honor in 2004 and to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 becoming the first person from Sheridan to be named to the Hall of Fame.
