About Me | Begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in awhile, or the light won’t come in. – Alan Alda For Americans, security is very closely related to freedom, because security represents freedom from anxiety and external threat, freedom from disease and poverty, freedom from tyranny and oppression, freedom of expression but also freedom from hurtful ideologies, prejudice and violations of human rights http://www.wilsoncenter.org/events/docs/A%20National%20Strategic%20Narrative.pdf I would like to see a continuation of the prosperity of the American people. What I see as the greatness of our country has been the broad distribution of prosperity, not one small group living large at the expense of everyone else living in poverty (as is the case in many countries). I like the idea of government of the people, by the people, and for the people.. dont gloss over that idea lightly, the idea has many ramifications and implications. I like the idea of limited, but effective, government. The limitation is to prevent its takeover by any special interest group to the detriment of the people. The effective part is that as crooks get more sophisticated, so must our government.. again, with the goal of continuing protection of rights of the individual.. over the tyranny of the wealthy or powerful. I think our government should not tell us what to believe, and should not attempt to control our personal decisions. While I respect the idea of freedom of religion.. that must include freedom from religion. I would like be able to say I am proud to be an American.. and I would like my children and their children to be able to do so also. Not because "we are the toughest MF in the Valley" but because we have strived to improve the human condition throughout the world, both by example and by action. "the truth is that the Corporate thieves and their party have been stealing from the "people" in order to live large.. all the time laughing at our stupidity for not recognizing that and doing something about it.. after all, we "believe" em when they call themselves the "job creators" (whether or not the "jobs" are in this country).. we believe em when they say prosperity "trickles down"... we even believe em when they tell us that reducing tax rates increases tax revenues, and (corollary) the reason for the huge debt is either (1) democrat social programs or (2) taxes are too high.... If I were to say that Americans are gullible and stupid, would that be unpatriotic??".. I dont like stupid Americans.. I would like to see better education and more opportunity for everyone.. I do not want to provide for everyone, but everyone should have a chance to provide for themselves. A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Al...(read more) |
