| About Me | Liz and I moved to Denver Colorado in 2008 and it's been pretty much our life's dream come true. Most importantly, we love all the sunshine (300+ days/year) and dry climate, particularly since the climate freed Liz from the horrible migraines she was getting during the hot, humid Kansas City summers. And of course, there's the proximity to the moutains. We can be in the foothills just west of Denver in 20 minutes and to the numerous open spaces of Jefferson County in 30 or so. Estes Park is a mere 1 1/2 hours, and our ranch near Trinidad is only 3 hours. For the equivalent from Kansas City, add 10 hours to what I just said. The people here are, for the most part, quite friendly. The work ethic is more "work to live" rather than "live to work" as it is in Kansas City. Many of us (including myself) get to work at 7 AM so we can scoot out at 4:00 PM and do our thing, whatever that might be. I love living in an urban setting instead of the ho-hum suburbs. We're just a mile from the southern end of downtown, and we have all manner of quirky shops and restaurants starting just 2 blocks from our door. The neighborhood is called Baker and consists mostly of charming Victorian houses built around 1890, and we're living in on of them. Even as we moved our things into our first house in the neighborhood, an old drunk went reeling down the sidewalk -- the grit -- and some people stopped to tell us our house looked like a little castle -- the charm. That house was well laid out for entertaining, which was great, because we've made numerous friends and acquaintances here, and we often host parties. The Denver metropolitan area is about 2 1/2 times the size of Kansas City metro, which is good is some ways, because whatever you want to buy or do, no matter how off-the-wall, you can find it here, and probably with more than one choice. On the other hand, the traffic can be absolutely horrendous! So, I have been taking public transportation to/from work and other times when I can. The bus stop is just around the corner, and after a 5 minute ride I'm at the light rail station where I pick up the 6:32 train that takes me to the Denver Tech' Center in the southern suburbs in just 20 minutes. I try to plan errands for the late afternoons, selecting places convenient to my commute. We live within walking distance of so many shops and restaurants that the cars sit idle a lot of the time.
