About Me | After graduating from Sequoia Coral attended San Mateo Jr College where his college deferment ran out and he was the last number called for the draft in 1971 and also the last time a draft number was ever called again. What luck. He opted to join the Air Force rather than be drafted into the Army, having lost a lot of his school mates in Vietnam. Prior to going to Basic Training at Lackland AFB, TX, he married his next door sweetheart, Edna, in April 1971. His first assignment was as weather equipment repairman at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. While at Tinker he applied for, and was accepted, into the Airman’s Education and Commissioning Program. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was enrolled in Oklahoma State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, 1974. He then went to Officers Training School where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in August 1974. His first assignment as an officer was from 1975 through 1979 at Davis Monthan AFB, AZ, as a Titan II Missile Combat Crew Commander. It was here where Coral and Edna gave birth to their daughter, Janae. It was at this point that Coral changed his career from missiles to space operations and was transferred to the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, North American Defense Command, Colorado Springs, as a Duty Orbital Analyst, Senior Director, and Chief of Deep Space Analysis. From 1981 to 1982 Coral was assigned to the 13th Missile Warning Squadron, Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, as the Space System Director. In 1982 Coral was assigned to Colorado Springs as the Space Surveillance Program Manager for the Deep Space Surveillance Network. It was during this time that Coral was selected to attend the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, where he earned a Masters of Science degree in Space Operations. His thesis entitled “Methane Generation from Human Waste in Space for Use as a Attitude Control Propellant was nominated for the most outstanding thesis in the School of Engineering. He called this jokingly his Feces’ Thesis. In December 1985 Coral was assigned to the 2nd Satellite Control Squadron, Falcon Air Force Station, CO, where he brought on line and managed the on-orbit satellites comprising the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS). In 1988 Coral attended Air Command and Staff College and upon graduation was assigned to the Pentagon’s Joint Chief of Staff as Space Operations Analyst. After leaving the Joint Staff in 1992 he took over as Director of the Air Force’s Operation and Test Facility at the National Test Facility, Falcon Air Force Base, Colorado. He established the first multiservice modeling and simulation team supporting Joint testing of space and missile defense (Star Wars or the Space Defense Initiative - SDI). Coral’s military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was promoted to Lt. Col. In 1991 and retired in 1995. After retirement he grew his hair out and joined a Rock ‘n Roll band, touring states around Colorado to include South Dakota, Sturgis, 2000 and 2001. Really! Check out YouTube, “Rikki Dee Hall and the VooDoo Hawks”. Coral now resides in Green Valley, AZ, one mile from the missile silo he used to work in as a 2nd lieutenant. That missile silo is now a museum, The Titan II Missile Museum in Green Va...(read more) |
