Joined USAF in 1966 & went through Basic and OTS. Served in Michigan directing F-101B, F-106 interceptors and potentially Bomarc long range interceptor missiles. Next served in the Space Defense Center in Chyenne Mt, in CO, tracking satellites and providing clearance for Apollo missions during their initial Earth orbit, before heading to the Moon. Left active duty after 4 years, but later served 14 1/2 years in Reserve duty at Wright Aeronautical Labs. Final 18 months did Reserve duty at Pentagon. Missile Electronics Equipment Technician. With this career field I was only ever stationed at our half-dozen mainland based Minuteman Missile bases (Missouri, North & South Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, and California). I calibrated the varied pieces of electronics equipment that missile site dispatching teams would use (on site, and inside the silos as well) to troubleshoot electrically reported malfunctions whether on the missile itself or the racks of equipment functioning drawers of electronic circuit cards, etc. .

Navy, 20+ Years

Drafted out of Washburn where I majored in Card, Ping Pong, Keg chucking, Swordfighting, and chasing cheerleaders. Went to boot camp while Navy guys were pretending they were on the moon. They sent Navy guys because they were looking for a place to get a beer in space. Rode ships until 1975 when I left the service as a Chief Petty officer serving with distinction but no good conduct medals....like being back at Seaman. Never was expelled, Dad was on the school board, probably the reason and my mom taught everybody how to dance in the 8th grade. I made two tours to Vietnam where we only lost about three forward observers with errant shots out an out of cal 5 inch 54 deck mounted automatic gun. We looked for submarines the whole time but we were only in 15 fathoms of water. Had three kids and a slew of foster kids. Went back to sea duty after completing, almost my criminal justice degree....still needed Junior English. Made all of the conflickts, Panama, Grenada, Legadon, Phuket Thailand(not really a conflict but the monkey bars were not a place to climb. Had 6 more kids and 6 more ships. Made it through two court martials unscathed but they said I could not retire and restricted me to my last base until my retirement papers came in. Loved my time in the service. 50 plus different countries 40 separate and different unique medals. Gold from Kuwait (plated) and we were supposed to get 10 grand but that would have made us mercenaries which we were because they paid us combat pay. I humped the 50 cal machine with mount and 500 rounds when I was 44 years old. Lost my best friend in Vietnam and have llost 1/4 of my grade school friends to cancer, God got a lot of my friends, Jimmy, Eldon, Vickie, james Peter, It was the water and the reason I am still here is I drank beer instead of the water.
