| About Me | I went to college and con't into graduate study in Oneonta. Back in the day I studied by morning, worked w/children in the afternoon, and partied by night. I worked at Head Start and got into the political/social work aspects of issues like poverty, neglect, sexism, & racism. I struggled w/ "compassion fatigue" from investigating child abuse (and having Regan cut services so that he could fund Contra war.) After becoming a Unitarian Universalist and meeting people walk-the-talk, I engaged in civil disobedience (Nevada Nuclear Test Site) and drove a donated truck with humanitarian supplies to Nicaragua. I guess I finally became an adult that year (1988) and abated some bad habits just in time to have a healthy baby. I lived in very cool city, Austin, TX while raising Keenan on my own. He was great and I was into the Austin neo hippie/progressive politics/ attachment parenting scenes, but too far from family in Scotia. In 1991 I moved to Albany, started casewk w/troubled teens and got into the Free School community. Alternative education made me life-long connections, including Phil (who I married in '96) and (step)daughter Jessalyn, a yr older than Keenan. When they were 9 and 10 yrs old they watched their brother Jarret be born, cut the cord, and welcomed him into our less than 100% traditional family. For example, I breastfed Jarret into his 5th year. Parenting 3 kids has been/is my greatest joy even when Jarret is challenging my patience. My children are all fun and smart. In 2005 I left my job (long story) and returned to graduate studies. I became a special ed. teacher near my 50th b'day. Today I am still happily married, Jess and Keenan are in college (she's in Argentina for the semester and he goes to SUNY Oneonta, both are readers, into music, on the dean's list, & somewhat into hippie culture, radical politics, as well as the regular stuff that makes a suburb like Scotia livable (soccer, hikes in woods, voting, swimming in Saratoga Lake, shopping at Goodwill and Crossgates). Since Jarret is ten, I'm not a genuine empty nester, but I does feel different w/only one at home. Hopefully, every day I get to read and do other stuff that I like, only some days are too busy. Last week Phil and I went...(read more) |
