Bob Heinen SCHS Military Alumni

Upon graduating from Sauk Centre High School in 1965, I attended the University of Minnesota, Morris for one year before obtaining an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Although my motivation in attending USMA, was not initially a military career, I graduated with an open mind and, in fact, was one of the few members of the class to volunteer for Vietnam. In 1970, after Airborne training and qualifying as a paratrooper, and completing Engineer Branch Basic, I reported for duty at Ft. Carson as a platoon leader with the 52nd Engr Bn. The summer of 1971 I was promoted to 1LT and received an alert for Vietnam. As my assignment in RVN was to be as a MACV advisor, I was required to attend the JFK Advisors School at Ft. Bragg for training in the Vietnamese language and customs. On my way to Ft Bragg, I stopped in Minnesota to marry Kandy DuBois (SCHS class of 1966)on September 11, 1971.
Arrived in Vietnam in Jan 1972 to serve as Engineer Advisor for MACV Team 68 in Vinh Long Province. In Dec 1972, I was medevaced with injuries from an IED explosion and spent four months recuperating in Letterman USAH, at the Presidio of San Francisco. When I was released, I reported for duty with the 14th Engineer Bn at Ft. Ord. I completed my required 5 year AD commitment (Sep ’75), and accepted a USAR commission. Kandy and I relocated to Madison WI, where I started grad school at the U of W and I joined the 961st Engr Bn (USAR) at Milwaukee, WI.

I earned a MSCE (1977), started our family,( two sons Chris/Nate, born ’76 & ’78), and began working for a Chicago based engineering firm. In April 1980, we relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where I began work for a new architecture engineering (AE) firm. For the next 12 years, I worked in CA while we expanded our family (Beth born in ’87) and continued to serve in the USAR, getting several great positions in HI, (in USACE and PACOM.)

In the next few years, I was alerted for several deployments, but never called up, however in 1981, I was called up for Operation Desert Storm and reported to my processing station in anticipation of assignment to Kuwait. The ground war was over so quickly, that we were ordered to stand down and return to home station. I returned to my civilian work. In November 1996, I was again called up, and this time actually deployed to be a part of the NATO Peace Keeping mission sent to the former Yugoslavia. For a year, I served as the DCSENG for USAEUR (Fwd) in Bosnia.

In Nov 1998, I retired from duty with the USAR and hung up my uniform for the last time after 32 years and 5 months. I returned to my AE firm in California, and continued to advance up the corporate ladder

In 2004 I was asked by my AE firm to serve as the in-country Program Manager (Iraq) to execute a 10 billion contract portfolio for infrastructure reconstruction. In 2006, I moved to another international AE firm doing similar utility rehabilitation work in Libya. In 2008, I had enough of Middle East travel and decided to start my AE firm providing land surveying, architecture and engineering services in northern California, which I am still doing today.
