| About Me | On a warm and sunny day, July 29, 1948 to be exact, yours truly was born in Santa Maria, California. Lived there until I was 4 or 5...my sister being born there when I was 3. We moved to the Cachuma Lake area, which is NW of Santa Barbara, CA. Attended College Elementary School in Santa Ynez which is near Solvang and Los Olivos, CA through 7th grade. We moved to Santa Barbara to live in Tucker's Grove County Park where I attented La Colina Junior High and San Marcos High School. Spent some time at Santa Barbara City College and when I left SBCC, it wasn't long before I was drafted into the U.S. Army. I was sent to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas for basic training and specialty training as a medical corpsman. While many of us were being sent to Viet Nam after training, I ended up being sent to Ludwigsburg, Germany for a couple of years to work as a medic in a 762nd Medical Detachment dispensary. Went back to SBCC for a while and also worked for 3 years in the ER of Goleta Valley Community Hospital. Eventually I realized I wasn't getting anywhere so, after some thought, I packed up and moved to Rocklin, CA where I went through the 2-year Forestry Technician program and Sierra College. Upon graduation from Sierra, I got a job with the U.S. Forest Service in Powers, Oregon taking care of the campgrounds in recreation season and a variety of other jobs like inspecting the work of tree planting contractors. A few years later I transferred to Detroit, Oregon to a job purely in recreation with the Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest. After about 12 years with the Forest Service, I decided I needed something different. Perhaps unwisely, I left there without having another job to move into and we relocated to Salem, OR. About 3 months after moving to Detroit, I married my wife Betty and 13 months later we had our daughter, Sarah. I worked a couple of tax seasons for H. and R. Block and finally landed a job with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier. I logged in most of my time on Rural Route 1 in West Salem and then on Rural Route 9 in the North Salem/Brooks area for my final year or so. January 1, 2009 I retired with 20 years with the Post Office and 32 years with the federal government.
