Ron Ron Rosmer '70 said:

John was very smart and hard working. In our final year, starting in the fall of 1969, a group of us formed an antipollution advocacy organization which was called :SCUM. It stood for: Society for the Control of Undesireable Mateials, or: Student Cleanup Movement.
As one of our main projects, we organized a "Clleanupathon" which entailed students from all schools in the Salmon Arm area going out and picking up litter. It was a great success, involving the whole community, which continued for a number of years thereafter. In the fall of 1970, we entered a float in the Salmon Arm fall fair parade, which won first price. (You can view it on my Youtube channel (Ron Rosmer), listed under the title: Salmon Arm fall fair parade, It consisted of an outhouse meant to represent Salmon Arm, with a characterture of Shuswap Lake, hinting that Salmon Arm should get a sewage treatment plant. After the parade, mayor Martin Budziak told me that council had voted to go ahead with the construction of the plant. This advocacy for a clean environment had such an influence on me that it motivated me to go into chemical engineering.

John Boom was one of the foremost founding members of SCUM, along with Irene Pawlas. John served as the technical research director, and Irene was the secretary. There are others, which you can see by viewing the 1970 school annual.
