About Me After high school and college I pursued a career in television and radio journalism. I started at a small radio station in Pueblo. I moved to a large, contemporary radio station (KHOW) in Denver after about one year. From there, a new marriage took me to San Francisco, California. I worked at KRON-TV and then spent several years at KCBS-RADIO. After seven years in California, I returned to Colorado and went to work at what was then, KOA-TV, in Denver. The station was owned by General Electric. A few years after I joined the staff, GE purchased NBC. Becoming a part of the NBC family opened huge new opportunties for my coworkers and me and changed the station's call letters to KCNC TV. I was able to produce the 1988 Republican Convention in New Orleans for the NBC owned and operated stations across the country. I also produced a number of college sports events including the Down Under Bowl in Melbourne, Australia. The game pitted CSU-Fort Collins vs. BYU. It was great fun, the Aussie's loved American college football and were tremendous hosts. A new marriage took me to Minneapolis/St. Paul. in 1989. I went to work for WCCO-Television (CBS affiliate) as their director of Time to Share. Time to Share was a community outreach program that combined news department resources with public affairs to promote volunteerism. I loved it. My husband and I purchased a home on the banks of the St. Croix River in nearby Stillwater. Stillwater is a picturesque, historic Upper-Midwest town. The highlight of our three year stint in Minnesota was the birth of our first son, Jack Dodge Highberger in 1990. This beautiful child transformed our lives. I had never imagined NOT working in television. We had made plans for in-home care for our new baby long before he arrived. Well, from the moment Jack was placed in my arms, I knew I could never leave him. On that day, I joined the ranks of what popular culture refers to as "a stay at home" Mom. In 1991, my husband rejoined the NBC News family when the corporation moved its technical and affiliate services to a new (non-union state as opposed to New York) location in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ah, the South. We took it in in all its glory and splendor. Long weekends at the marvelous Southeastern coastal villages. Gorgeous springtimes and autumns. We visited the abundance of Civil War and Revolutionary War sites scattered up and down the coast. In November of 1993, our family was joined by our youngest son, Nicholas Daurio Highberger. Nick is the family clown and has always helped each of us keep our perspective. The boys attended St. Gabriel's Catholic School, played soccer, basketball and baseball with our neighborhood YMCA. Summers would find us vacationing in Colorado, Kansas or somewhere around the States or overseas. Life was very full and very happy. In 1999, we had an opportunity to purchase my family home in Rye. It was a leap of faith and we jumped. There were clear upsides and downsides to our decision. The upsides: Our boys would grow up in a small town surrounded by family and old friends. I would be near to my aging parents to give assistance and love. The downsides: Ken would commute to North Carolina. Eventually, Ken developed a consulting business he operated from his home office. He traveled all over the world coordinating major events like the World Soccer Cup, all of the past decade's Olympics, the death of the Pope in Rome, and of course, the war in Iraq. Exciting, but not conducive to a harmonious family life. Next, Ken moved to Atlanta, Georgia to become WXIA-TV's Director of Operations. Great job, bought a nice suburban home, lousy commute. We struggled through this for a couple of years. Now, Ken is the Director of Technology and Operations at KUSA-TV Denver. He lives and works in Denver and commutes home on the weekends. We are all happy and together. We love having Ken's condo in Denver. It allows the kids to attend Bronco, Avalanche and Nuggets games. And, I enjoy getting a "city-fix" every so often. You know, Rye is great, but we don't have a diverse selection of museums, arts, restaurants. So, currently, our youngest son Nick is a freshman at Rye High School. He is an honors student and 4-sport athlete. He is still a lot of fun and we are truly enjoying this stage of his life. Jack is a freshman at Arizona State University. He's majoring in Journalism...not sure what area of specialty he wants to pursue. Jack is a serious student of History, French and would someday like to work and live in Paris. He was an excellent high school athlete who was sideliined with two separate, major knee injuries. Now, he is a crazy-serious golfer and hits his University's YMCA daily for workouts. My life is full but deadly boring at the present. I teach a television news class at the high school and spend time volunteering in our community. My parents and kids are the focus of Ken's and my lives at this time. So, we look forward to a bit of quiet, much more world travel, some golf and maybe just a walk together! If any of you reading this return to Rye, please know our home is always open to you. Come for a visit and cup of tea! Gosh, I hope I haven't told you all more than you wanted to know. In a nutshell, my life has been terrific. The most rewarding and beautiful years are those I have shared with my sons ...(read more)
