About Grayson J. Mahin, 88, of Rushville, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Miller s Merry Manor.

Born Aug. 21, 1916, in Rushville, he was the son of Wilbur and Ethel (Hurst) Mahin, both deceased. He married Lois M. Higham Oct. 17, 1943; she preceded him in death Aug. 3, 2001.

Mr. Mahin lived most of his life in Rushville and was a 1934 graduate of Rushville High School. He graduated from Franklin College with a B.A. in 1938 and received his Master s Degree from Butler University. A civics and government teacher, he began his career at Burney High School in Decatur County prior to serving with the U.S. Army in World War II. Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to teaching in Manilla, moved to Rushville High School in 1951, and retired from teaching in 1981. He served as athletic director at Rushville High School. He had also been the high school s baseball coach and assistant football coach. An active member of Main Street Christian Church, he had served as an Elder and a Deacon. He had also been a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the F.O.P., Rush County Historical Society, the American Legion, and the state and county retired teachers associations. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from RCHS in 2002. He had served as Dean at Hoosier Boys State. He had been a basketball and track official for the IHSAA. He was an avid RCHS sports fan and a Golden Booster Club member.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Mahin of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marcia Vance of Rushville; one brother, Louis Mahin of Greenfield; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville, with the Rev. Hank Anderson and the Rev. Becky Gibbons officiating.

Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grayson Mahin Scholarship Fund at the Rush County Community Foundation.
