Favorite School Memory | Managing to graduate! I didn't really appreciate how much fun I had until I went alway to college and found out how little people in larger school were able to be involved in. |
About Me | What I've been up to the past 40+ yrs After graduating RVHS in "61" my family moved to Phoenix and I went on to earn a BS in Animal Science from the University of Arizona. After that I went on to Colorado State University and achieved my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. I spent my first 10 years in a mixed, mostly large, animal practice in NW Phoenix. I did feedlots, dairy, lots of equine (was even an equine anesthetist for 10 years) and had one of the largest sheep and goat practices in the state. While the first 10 years were the most fun (like out of the pages of James Harriet's All Creatures Great & Small), you can only have so much fun in life (and survive the beating of large animal practice) so I retired to small animals starting my official career in emergency critical care. In 1980 I moved to the Verde Valley, home of the hated Mingus Mauraders. I joined a small animal practice in Cottonwood while continuing to work emergency critical care in Phoenix. I officially retired from regular small animal practice (except almost non stop relief work) in 1990 and returned to full time emergency critical care practice in Phoenix while continuing to live in Cornville. In 1990 I also start my "voodoo" career opening All Pets Acupuncture & Holistic Health Clinic in Sedona which I later moved to Cornville after I was laid up for a year after a mountain biking accident (that's another story) in 1999. Currently I still live in Cornville with numerous dogs, cats, frogs, birds, a garden (every year since the 7th grade) and a wife. I work full time emergency critical care in NW Phoenix, run my holistic practice and do surgery at a few practices on the side. I would like to start to slow down in a few more years but due to the current economic melt down I may have to put that off until I'm a 103 when l plan to take a few years off, kick up my heels and then just die. In my spare time I have been married 3 times with several near misses. I am currently married to another holistic veterinarian who practices near Santa Barbara California. Women seem to tolerate me better if we are not together quite so much. Hopefully the 3rd time's a charm. I'm not sure I have enough energy left to do this another time. Like brother Tom, I have always been very active; just not talented nor competitive. I was a jog-aholic until I blew out both knees and reluctantly turned to hiking. I spent 10 years as a competitive horse trail ride judge (which partially lead to my first wife) and then another 10+years doing long distance riding but not competitively. I've spent numerous years on horseback and foot lost in the the White Mountains; figuratively and sometimes actually. That's where I was on 9/11 which will always be 9/22 to me because that was when I first heard of it. I also took up mountain biking which lead to my second wife and my accident. Did I mention that I was a fish-aholic. And cross country skiing too. One has to do something in the winter. If it wasn't for the mandatory continuing education that veterinarians are required to take I would have done nothing but work my entire life. Every time I have to go get educated I try to go to someplace a little exotic (to me) and then spend a few days to a week extra. That got me into snorkeling and of course lots of hiking. Even though I was never a great student I do enjoy the process of being educated. After graduation from vet school I have continued my college career acquiring enough credits for a degree in business and in art, but without actually taking the time to get the said degrees. I can't think of anything really exciting that has ever happened to me besides LIFE. So that is my thumb nail sketch of the last 40+ years since the class of 1961. I still proudly claim Round Valley as my childhood home where I always yearn to return and which... beware I may some day do. Update since 50th class reunion: We are now permanent residents of Costa Rica. Ella lives there full time and I still return to the US to work. This year (2018) I will be spending half the years there in 2 month increments. When in the US I am a relief emergency critical care clinician at Blue Pearl Emergency & Specialty practices in the greater Phoenix area and on the side still run All Pets Acupuncture & Holistic Health Clinic. We have applied for our veterinary licenses in Costa Rica although I don't intend to get into practice down there other than to keep from getting bored. While in CR I mostly move rocks around our little farm, garden and try to stay out of trouble which is easier to do as I get older. If any of you are ever wandering around Costa Rica you may find us ...(read more) |
