| About Me | A year or two after graduation I served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) in France, where I gained a bit of perspective, discovered talents and interests and set my feet on an international path. Afterwards I worked a number of jobs (roofing, concrete, painting, truck driver) and took a couple of classes at Sierra College while deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up. I started a B.S. at Brigham Young University in Zoology in 1993 and then a Master of International Development at Utah State University in 1997. I worked on several projects around Africa until I became fed up with the corruption, waste and politicization of development aid and decided to change career paths. I went back to school for a 2nd Master’s degree in 2003 at Sciences-Po in Paris, France and have continued on for a Ph.D. in political science focused on mediation and conflict resolution here at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. While working on the faculty of Michigan State University managing a project in Mali I met a gorgeous girl from Kalamazoo. For some reason, she decided I was worth taking a chance on so we married in 2003. We now have two little rugrats and hope one or two more will come our way some day. Marrying Carolyn is the best decision I’ve ever made. Besides the Ph.D., I work as a consultant in peace building and conflict resolution (most recently with the UN Development Programme regional office in Suva, Fiji) and manage a collaboration network of researchers that look at issues of good governance in the Asia-Pacific region.
