Denis Conkey
Class of 1969
Navy, 20+ Years
I entered AFROTC at OSU and received a Commission in 1974 and was slated for Pilot School. Due to the military wind down of Vietnam, fewer pilots were needed, therefore I sought out the Navy recruiter and entered the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1976 and received my wings as a Naval Flight Officer in 1977.
I received F-14 Training during 1978 and entered my Fleet Squadron “The World Famous Pukin Dogs†in October of that year as a Radar Intercept Officer flying in the Tomcat. In 1981 I was assigned to VX-4 (Operational Fighter Test Squadron) until I left the active duty Navy in 1985. During this time, I was fortunate to be sent to the “TOPGUN†school for 5 weeks and was the first aircrew to fly with an F/A-18 wingman working on mixed section tactics.
I entered the Naval Reserves in 1986 and flew in VF-1485 for one year and then in VF-301 (Reserve F-14 Squadron out of Miramar, CA) until 1994. Finished my Reserve duty in Pt. Mugu and retired from the Navy Reserves in 2003 after 26 years of service.
