About Me | papa, husband, Christian, biologist, small business owner, Democrat. all-around nice guy :) If you care... Temperment: Generally very happy, even keeled, generally objective, but can get pretty worked up and passionate. INF/TP so the tests tell me. Religiously: I'm a agnostic theist with a Mormon foundation and liberal Christian leanings and sometimes lean agnostic on rainy days, though I'm always agnostic about my agnosticism. Politically: I am a civil libertarian and a fiscal conservative*. I am a Democrat. The Republican party has long ago left civil libertarian and fiscal conservative principles and has become a reactionary know-nothing socially intolerant party of no good principles. If a party ever arises that returns to full civil libertarian and fiscally conservative values, I'll join that party. For now, Democrats are all I have. 30 years ago I would have been called a moderate, today apparently to the republican party I'm a socialist. I believe the a free market is a powerful force for economic good and that government should be in our lives as minimally as possible. I believe that corporations can limit freedom as well, and can be a corrupting influence on our democracy. I also believe that some issues can not be solved for the greater good by the market (the "commons", infrastructure, defense are two obvious ones, environment and basic research are others). I believe one of the constitutionally mandated roles of government it to make sure all citizens are treated equally before the law and allows the maximum possible freedom for individuals. Though I support some policies that might be deemed 'liberal', I also tend towards 'conservative' and 'libertarian' values when it comes to others. Whatever policies increase the greater liberty of individuals overall and are fiscally sound, I'll support. *fiscally conservative in the old sense, not the new "cut taxes till there's nothing left' modern "tea party" sense. Fiscally conservative as in spending on things that promote above, investments and a balanced approach. You know, like a good household would do. My interests are science, politics, gardening, cooking, knit...(read more) |
