About Me | There might be a few people wondering just who I am, so I thought I'd share a letter I sent to my sister explaining my religious views. That'll probably go a long way to explaining just who I am. Dear Sandy, You were wondering about my theology, so I thought I would explain further. You are correct about Christian Zionists. Most evangelicals are strong supporters of Israel, so I’m not surprised that Greg and Daneen are. Paul and Mark I think could be considered Evangelicals, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were pro-Israel. There’s a movement among the far left to de-legitimize Israel, boycott Israel, and label Israel as an apartheid state. This all sounds a little strange when you consider that the Arabs are the ones who want a country free of any Jews. Anyway, I take all this so seriously that, just within this past week I threw out 5 LP’s by Pete Seeger, a folk singer from back in the 1960’s, who suddenly decided to come out in support of these far leftists. In closing this subject, I might mention that I came to this belief probably due to the influence of dad. He used to like to quote Genesis 12: 3 when talking about the Jews and Israel. As far as Lutherans are concerned, the ELCA hasn’t done so well in this area, while the AFLC whose church I belonged to when I lived in Cokato was strongly pro-Israel, and I’ve even heard a couple of Missouri Synod pastors make Pro-Israel statements. Getting down to specific religious beliefs, I am what would be called a “Biblical Unitarian”. Essentially what that means is that I believe Jesus to be the Messiah and the Son of God, which is what he says he is, but he is not “The God”. If he were God himself, one might well ask who he was praying to. It seems a little facetious to say he was praying to himself. Also Acts 10: 28 speaks about God anointing Jesus If he was God, that would mean that he anointed himself. In Lutheranism these kind of questions may not arise, although I’ve heard some Lutheran preachers talk of Jesus as if he was God. However, what someone else believes has never bothered me as long as it doesn’t effect my own spiritual life (like singing hymns to “Our God Jesus Christ” which actually happened at the Covenant church in Hutchinson which I used to attend). I don’t know if you recall, but the Lake Preston Lutheran Church back in the 1950’s never read any creed in their services except the Apostle’s Creed. I seem to remember that there was a reason for this, but I don’t recall what it was. Nowadays they may also read the Nicene Creed, but that creed introduces some new ideas I wouldn’t necessarily go along with. In my senior catechism book the most it says about the nature of Jesus is that he is both true god and true man, but it doesn’t explain how he can be both at the same time. I can go along with this, but I never interpreted this to mean that Jesus was God himself. I also don’t believe that Jesus created the world. Interestingly, Jehovah’s Witnesses who don’t believe that Jesus was God, do believe that he helped creat the world. Finally, I should add that there are 5 different religions which call themselves “The Church of God”. The church I attend has no branches in South Dakota. It was founded in Illinois, and has a Bible college in the Atlanta, GA area. As far as the worship service goes, it could be similar to the one in Greg and Daneen’s church. It is sort of a toned down version of the one you’d find at a Word of Life church. That includes someone playing drums while we sing the hymns. I’ve attended the Word of Life church in Hutchinson a few times in the past, and they have a full Christian Rock Band performing through their services. Oh, and as far as politics are concerned, I’m not really big on party politics although, being a neo-conservative, I tend to back the Republicans these days. Among the current politicians I tend to support Sarah P...(read more) |
