On a training flight from Adak, Naval Air Station in Alaska in November 1949 to Whitdbey Island on Vancouver Island, Washington, the PV2 Patrol plane crashed with all members of the crew killed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The aircraft was lost for almost forty years before a mining geologist located the downed aircraft. John Harold Wood and his crew members are entombed at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
