| About Me | Following Rim I attended Cal Poly for two years studying engineering. I worked for Speed Donaldson as a logger, equipment operator, and sawmiller at his mill at the Scout Camp on weekends and summers. I really enjoyed forestry work and one day it hit me, "do I want to spend my life going to the same building wearing a white shirt with a pocket protecter and shiny shoes, or do I want to work in the forest wearing Levis and work boots with a picnic in a different location nearly every day, enjoying the fresh air, viewing wildlife". Well, duh, I checked out of Cal Poly and studied forestry at Northern Arizona University. Received BS and MS degrees in Forestry. Worked on the Kaibab National Forest for several years, then switched to forest research at the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Research Station. The Station sent me to Fort Collins, Colorado. to attend Colorado State University to learn more about forest modeling and build a computer model for projecting growth, regeneration, and mortality, and for simulating different scenarios of harvests in order to select the best management practice. built a very successful model that was used by foresters throughout the southwest. The Forest Service used th model, as did Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, The University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. I earned a PhD for that effort and in 1975 I published it and set it up on the Forest Service main frame computer in Albuquerque, NM. I transferred to Alaska in January of 1978 and spent the next 22 years overseeing the inventory of the Stats's renewable resources. Great jobs, wonderful experiences. Came face to face with a Mountain Lion, couple of Grizzle Bears, a Black Bear, Bob Cat, and one Mad Moose. While in Alaska my wife, daughter, and I developed a business where I would fly us out to Eskimo villages and buy the native artwork, walrus ivory and whale bone carvings, dolls, skin sewing. grass and baleen baskets, etc. We sold to collectors, gift shops, museums, cruise ships, and at trade shows. I retired in 2000 and moved to Hawaii where we bought a home near Kailua Beach on Oahu. Remodeled the home and built a small apartment on a second floor that we rented to tourists. I also picked up a job teaching mathematics at Hawaii Pacific University. The political turmoil over vacation rentals made life difficult and combining that with family health issues we decided to move on to where better health care could be obtained, so here we are in Florida. I lost my wife a couple of years ago, but my daughter lives with me and she is a really special. When she was young, I would tell her she was a great kid and maybe I would keep her another day or so. Now I tell her "Don't you dare run away". She cooks, cleans, makes me take my pills, pays all the bills (with my money of course) and really looks after me. And that is a ...(read more) |
