His spot occupied the top row, symbolic of the 18 years he spent here; 18 years, the last few spent in a quiet struggle. In an era of social media oversharing, Mark Peterson shared little about his diagnosis; never felt it was necessary to talk about his fight with cancer, not when there was a job to do, a show to cut, a soundbite to edit. He was the behind the scenes captain, a solver of unseemingly, unsolvable problems. As modest as he was skilled on the Chess board, games might sometimes last months, with a move of every day or so, he’d win almost every time. We all knew he was brilliant, not that he would tell you that, not when the lead story of the 6 pm wasn’t done, not when a feed was coming in or a crew was headed out. He won’t like the fact we’re doing this, talking about him, talking about how much we already miss him. But we believe you should know he deserves so much more than these words could ever provide. Our team is minus its captain today and we are not better for it. So for now we will remember this; his face smiling, his personality stoic, his title Chief Editor. Mark Peterson, just because you were too busy to tell the world how great you were, doesn’t mean we can’t at least try to do it ourselves.
