About Me I was born in Richmond, CA and attended J.O. Ford Elementary, Downer Junior HS, and then RHS between 1973 and 1977. In June 1977, 3 days after our RHS Class of 1977 graduation, I hitched a U-Haul trailer to the back of my 1966 Mustang Fastback, loaded it with my stuff and moved to Fallbrook, CA (northern San Diego County in Southern California). I lived with my older sister's family while attending a local community college (my sister and I are the bookends of 4 siblings where she is the oldest and I am the youngest with 22 years between us). I turned green on the weekends mowing lawns and doing yard work to earn gas money. I swam a lot for exercise, so while in college in between my engineering courses I also took lifeguard, water safety instructor, first aid, advanced first aid and CPR classes to work during the summer as a water safety instructor (WSI) and lifeguard on Camp Pendleton (next to and west of Fallbrook). After graduating from Palomar College, I transferred to U.C. Irvine in Orange County and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in June 1983. In Summer 1983 I started working as a Junior Design Engineer and Survey Chainman for a civil engineering/land surveying firm in San Diego that specialized in subdivision civil engineering. In 1984 I had the opportunity to be one of the Olympic Torch Runners running through San Diego County carrying the Olympic Torch on its way to the 1984 Summer Olympic games in Los Angeles. I learned where I would be carrying the torch only a couple days before the actual event. I drove to the location, near (old) Camp Elliott and I-15. It was a desolate location in the City of San Diego and I thought I would be lucky if my mother even came to watch me carry the torch, but fortunately I was wrong and the old highway was lined with Olympic fans waving flags, etc. by the time the Olympic flame was passed to my torch. In the summer of 1984 I also participated in a Bud Light triathlon in San Diego - I enjoy swimming, but I never thought I would be swimming miles in San Diego Bay starting at 6:00 a.m. in the morning...or riding on my old Schwinn Continental 10 speed that I had since the 7th grade (which I think is made out of water pipe and probably weighs more than 40 lbs...) looping between Fiesta Island on Mission Bay in San Diego and the National City bayfront to the south before riding back to Seaport Village. I had never participated in a triathlon before and was definitely in the novice class - after swimming in the San Diego Bay I did not know if the clock ran continuously or stopped after swimming and restart when I started riding my bike, so to save time when I got to my bike in the parking lot I just quickly stripped out of my swim trunks and pulled on my bicycle shorts while I did not think anyone was looking. I guessed wrong and there were lots of whistles, etc...and I now know there are triathlon outfits for participants to wear that do not require changing between the swimming, bicycling and running...(like I said...novice class...). After finishing the last part of the triathlon (running) and crossing the finish line I found out I was somewhere in the 700+th place, but I finished which is all I wanted... (the pros had probably already finished breakfast and showered by then...). After having some free orange juice and yogurt I put my bike on the back of my Mustang and drove back to my apartment. It was probably only 9:30 in the morning, but I had been up since 4 AM and was exhausted so all I wanted to sleep. I lazily pulled my Nike running shoe off my left foot without untying its shoelace. I started to do the same for my right shoe, but it was being stubborn and not come off. Instead of simply pulling at the shoelace to loosen the shoe I just pulled harder. The shoe finally flew off my foot and the muscles in my right leg instantly locked up around my knee...I could not bend my right leg at my knee for a week... In late 1984 I received an offer to work for another civil engineering firm in Carlsbad, CA (a coastal city in northern San Diego County), so I moved to a new apartment in Encinitas, CA (also on the coast just south of Carlsbad). I finished earning an MBA with an emphasis in Real Estate from San Diego's National University in late 1985 (I started going to graduate school in early 1984 two evenings a week and on Saturdays). In 1987 I passed both the California Real Estate Broker's exam and the California State Professional Civil Engineer's exam. In September 1987 I accepted an offer to start working for the City of San Marcos (inland from Carlsbad about 10 miles) as an Associate Civil Engineer. I was responsible for designing various capital improvement projects for the City (traffic signals, parks, fire stations, Civic Center complex, Sheriff station, road improvements, commercial building sites, etc.). In late 1987 I moved out of my Encinitas apartment and headed a little more west. I bought a condo a couple miles away (closer to the beach...I could see the Pacific Ocean from my bedroom....). In late 1989 I saw Michelle on the other side of the net while playing beach volleyball and met her again a few weeks later at a dance. We were married a few months after I proposed to her on her birthday by tying an engagement ring into her birthday present - in the shoelaces of a pair of running shoes... Our first son, James Anthony Regello, was born in 1991. We moved from the condo in Encinitas to a new (larger) home in San Marcos in late 1991. Our second son, Richard Andrew Regello, showed up in 1994. I took my family to Concord, CA in October 2002 for our RHS Class of 1977 25th year reunion. Since it was a 500+ mile drive from southern California we made a short family vacation out of the trip and also went canoeing on the Russian River in Sonoma County and to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (then called Marine World / Africa USA) amusement park in Vallejo. We remodeled our home in 2004 to make it bigger so each of the three boys (Richard, James and my stepson Ben) would have their own room and there would be a "granny flat" for my mom to live (but she passed away in 2006 at 87 years old). I still have my 1966 Mustang Fastback 2+2 which I had while a senior at Richmond High School. A few years ago it was my daily driver to work, but then the insurance company recommended we have it professionally appraised. The value was surprisingly high (especially considering it cost $950 to buy back in late 1976...) - so now it stays in the garage under a car cover and only comes out for special occasions (hot dates with my bride and an occasional car show now and then...and hopefully RHS reunions...). Over the decades I have done improvements to the Mustang to make it safer and add a few 21st. century conveniences (disc brakes, digital iPod Bluetooth radio (to keep up with James' and Richard's technology...), computer-controlled EFI 331 stroked engine, 5-speed manual transmission, improved suspension, power rack & pinion steering, power windows & locks, alarm, AC, more comfortable seats, etc.). It is still an old car, but very fast and fun to drive. The engine loves gas though...I think it uses about a gallon at every stop light...sometimes I think it only gets 10 MPG, and that is going downhill with the engine off... My Mustang has now been a high school car, college car, date car, a daily driver car to work, then a second family car to go to Boy Scout campouts with James and Richard - and now it is an investment as a Restomod... We have visited northern CA during a couple family vacations. Stopped by RHS after we had gone white water rafting on the middle fork of the American River near Placerville, CA and also when we rented a cabin at Johnson's Beach on the Russian River in Guerneville (Sonoma County west of Santa Rosa). More recently we have been driving through Richmond on our way to Cotati in Sonoma County where Richard has been living since attending and graduated from Sonoma State University. One of our day trips was to SF while we were vacationing in Sonoma County in June 2003 and the day was sunny and warm - we wore shorts and tank tops in SF - so my family did not believe me when I tried to explain June weather in SF is normally real foggy and sometimes even wet...not sunny like southern California... Many of our family vacations have included a sleeping bag and tent (most often with Boy Scouts...even to Hawaii and nearly a month of camping along the east coast...), but in May 2009 Michelle and I decided to leave the camping equipment at home and we all flew to Disney World in Florida - and stayed at WDW's on-site "Beach Resort" hotel. It really is a magical place to visit. My wife, after reading an unofficial DW guidebook before our trip, did an amazing job organizing our day-to-day events for an entire week. Before we left home Michelle laid out our day-to-day agenda on her computer and then downloaded it to her Apple iTouch to have with her during our trip (this was before we had cell phones...). Thanks to her advance planning we were able to see and do as much as possible while there while avoiding the crowds as much as possible at the same time. In 2008 my stepson Ben moved to San Francisco and works with pre-school age kids. Our older son James (1991) earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2008 and after graduating from Palomar College here in San Marcos with an Associates Degree has been working for a property management company in Carlsbad, Ca. Richard (1994) earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2011 and graduated from Escondido Charter High School in June 2012. His interest is biology and in August 2012 he started his freshman year at Sonoma State University (SSU), which is a small beautiful campus about a hour north of SF (and over 530 miles from home...). We are obviously very proud of him when he graduated 4 years later ("...with one unit to spare...") in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology "With Distinction" and "Cum Laude". He is now working full-time for an environmental consulting firm in Santa Rosa, Ca. Both James and Richard stayed involved with their Boy Scout Troop and the San Diego Council after earning their Eagle Scout ranks (they were both 17 at the time) until they aged out at 18 years old. Since they both had more merit badges than required for the Eagle Scout rank and stayed active with their Troop they also both earned their Eagle Scout Bronze, Gold and Silver Palms. We were also very proud of them when they also actively applied themselves to give back to Scouting by working during their summers as BSA staff (merit badge counselors) at Mataguay Scout Ranch, which is an 800-acre ranch about 50 miles from home during the BSA summer camp season. It was great reuniting with RHS Classmates and a favorite counselor Mr. Frank Banducci in Pittsburg, CA in December 2015 that was organized by Kay Meadows and Alan Lewellyn. Mr. Banducci was very generous to me - he knew I had driven a long way to attend the get together in Pittsburgh and invited me to stay overnight at his home in Pinole. Sadly he passed away in early 2017 and I am sure many of us will miss him. In April 2016 Michelle and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a 2 week trip to Italy. The first week was a cruise from Barcelona, Spain to Venice, Italy and the second week was on land from Venice, to Florence, to Reggello (20 minutes southeast of Florence), then Rome. We liked the 2016 cruise around Italy so much we did a transatlantic repositioning cruise in April 2017 from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Copenhagen, Denmark with port stops in the Azores, Ireland, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands in between. We flew home from Denmark to New York with a layover in Iceland where we stayed a couple days in Reykjavik. My wife loves horses and I surprised her with a Viking horse ride excursion and then a trip to Iceland's famous Blue Lagoon - probably the world's largest outdoor jacuzzi... My wife and I had fun when we joined other RHS graduates on the RHS reunion cruise in September 2017 aboard the Carnival Imagination in Long Beach for a 4-day cruise. Kay and Alan did a great job organizing the event. We recently returned from another RHS get-together in Genoa, NV in October 2018. The 500 mile drive there was fun because we drove my 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback. While there it was great fun going with RHS friends to nearby Virginia City to see the World Championship Outhouse Races... My personal electronic mail address is tregello at gmail...(read more)
