My Dear Fellow Classmates,
I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to our reunion this weekend (Aug 28-29,2026).
I had such a great time at the 50-year one, I have been waiting for the 60th ever since. But, I can’t do it, and I’ll give you the reason as briefly as I can – which is not very brief!
I have lived in Montreal, Canada for 50 years, and although still hold my American citizenship, I have genuinely embraced being a citizen of this country. As a Canadian, I am offended to my very core at how the current American President frequently announces that he wants Canada as the 51st state.
He has repeatedly insulted us by calling our Prime Minister “Governor”, and has been making aggressive threats against Canada (and Greenland) since shortly after his last inauguration.
The complete failure of the Trade Talks between our two countries, just a few days ago, shows to what lengths he will go to in an attempt to get Canada under his thumb.
By putting crippling tariffs on Canadian goods that Americans want and need from us, he is also causing suffering to millions of his own citizens.
He treats all his closest friends as enemies, and makes Putin and Kim Jong Un – two of the most ruthless dictators in the world today – his roll models.
His latest threat is to rename Lake Ontario, Lake America. He has no more right to do this than he did to decree the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America! He doesn’t even abide by International Law, so he certainly has no right to change it.
So, along with millions of other Canadians, our household is doing everything we can to avoid buying American, in every way possible. This includes my not going over the border to enter the US, and I would only do so if one of my siblings is either nearly or freshly dead.
So, until he and his followers are no longer in control of the United States Government, I cannot break my word. The upcoming class reunion puts my commitment to a tough test – it has been very difficult not to breakdown and say, “Oh come on, just this once – it’s probably the last class reunion ever – I really want to see those people!”
It hurts, it really hurts, and I must thank Mary, Cari, Janine, Bonnie, Eileen, Holly and your other team members for all the work you’ve done to make this happen. But I must sadly decline your kind invitation.
I hope all who are lucky enough to attend next weekend’s activities have a wonderful time.
