About | Otto, Merland J. 59 years old, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, passed away March 30, 2011 at his home of a massive heart attack. Merland was born on December 5, 1951 in Redwood Falls, Minnesota to Norman and Dorothy Otto. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Marshall, Minnesota. He was a graduate of Redwood Falls High School with an architectural degree in landscaping and design from the University of Minnesota. Merland was working as a principal planner for the City of Minneapolis dealing mainly with airport issues. He was an architecture designer for Ralph Burke and Associates and Hakanson Anderson, Inc. of Anoka, MN, designing airports and community projects. He was one of the founders of Pheasants Forever and member of the Minnesota Pheasants Forever Board of Directors from 1984-1997, also serving as Chairman of the Board. He also served as President of both the East and West Metro area chapters. Merland enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, flower gardening and being with friends and family. He is survived by sons, Nathan Otto of Los Angeles, CA, and David Otto of Minnetonka, MN; mother, Dorothy Otto of St. James, MN, and brothers, Steven Otto of Maple Grove, MN, Michael (Kristen) Otto, of Dodge Center, MN; sister, Doranne (Jim) Larsen of St. James, MN, and niece, Danette (Henry) Keim, Lance (Abby) Larsen, and Zachary Otto. He is preceded in death by baby daughter, Jennifer Otto; his father, Norman Otto; grandparents, Hugo and Elsie Otto, William and Helena Schultz; aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services will be at 2:30 pm, with visitation starting at 1:00 pm, on Monday April 4, 2011 at Evans Nordby Funeral Home, 34 2nd St. NE, Osseo, MN 55369. Luncheon will be served at the Osseo Community Center, 415 Central Avenue, Osseo, MN following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Disabled Veterans and Pheasants Forever.
