| About | Steve was born January 7, 1949 in Springfield to Reynold “Swede” and Elaine (Liebl) Hammerschmidt. On June 20, 1968, Steve was united in marriage to Becky Ann Fromm. Shortly after their marriage, Steve enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country in Germany. Steve and Becky began their married life there while he was stationed abroad. He served in the Army until 1971, forming many lifelong friendships. Steve always enjoyed staying connected with those friends and sharing stories of their time together in Germany. After returning home, Steve began his career working in the Redwood County Assessor’s Office, where he developed the skills that would later lead him to start his own business, Southwest Appraisals and Consultants, serving the community for many years. Steve had a lifelong love for the outdoors and could often be found hunting or fishing. He was also known among friends and family as an avid blackjack player who enjoyed the thrill of the game. Music, however, was one of the greatest passions of Steve’s life. Along with his parents and brothers, music was a constant presence in the Hammerschmidt family. Steve was a talented steel guitar and keyboard player, performing in 15 different bands throughout his lifetime. His musical journey began in 1967 with Harmony Knights and The Sailors, continued through the 70’s and 80’s with the Country Swingers and Misty Blue, and later carried on with Hammer Tyme and Hoof Hearted, where he continued to play until 2023. Through music, Steve built many friendships and brought joy to countless audiences across the region. Steve is lovingly remembered by his children: Stacey (Chad) Heiling of Redwood Falls & David (Sone) Hammerschmidt of New Ulm; grandchildren: Jon (Taylor) Hammerschmidt of New Ulm & McKenna (Jaden) Sellner of Sleepy Eye; great-grandchildren: Porter Hammerschmidt & Beckham Sellner; brothers: Ken, Scott (Esther) & Dan (Karen) Hammerschmidt of Redwood Falls; sister Pam Sisco of Seaforth; girlfriend Deb Holmes of Redwood Falls; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Becky, parents Elaine & Swede, and his brother Mike. Steve will be remembered for his love of family, his passion for music and his one-of-a kind sense of humor. |
