Richard was born on June 18, 1951, in Minneapolis, MN to Dr. Warren and Dorothy Lee. He grew up in Redwood Falls, MN and graduated from Redwood Falls High School. Following high school graduation, Rich attended Augustana College and was employed there after completing his bachelor’s degree. He then worked for EROS Data Center for 30 years as a senior systems analyst.

Rich was an avid fisherman, spending much time at the family cabin in Battle Lake, MN and enjoying annual fishing trips to the Lake of the Woods. He also enjoyed taking pictures and watching movies. Other favorite pastimes included card and game playing, reading science fiction, and listening to music. Rich had a wonderful sense of humor and a kind and generous heart.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Joyce (Lee) Hovdesven of Petaluma, CA and her husband Wayne; his niece, Kristen (Hovdesven) Hrasok and her husband Greg; his nephew, Erik Hovdesven and his former wife Jan (Lee) Kallevig of Farmington, MN.

Also grateful for sharing his life is his “adopted family”, Esther Smith of Sioux Falls; Dick and Shari Smith; Jamie, Kjerstin, Johnathan and Isaac Smith, all of Sioux Falls; Michael, Kerri and Alanna Smith of Sioux Falls; Dan Cathy and Josh Smith of Sioux Falls; Suzanne Smith of Sioux Falls; Ellie and Joe Banales of El Paso, TX; David Smith of Indianapolis, IN; Cody Smith of Sioux Falls; and Rebecca Smith of Lanzhou, China.

His parents preceded him in death.
