What is Robin Williams known for?

Robin McLaurin Williams, a respected American actor and comedian, was born on July 21, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. A well-known alumni of Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, he is best known for his exceptional improvisational skills and a vast range of characters he breathed life into on film, earning him the reputation as one of the greatest comedians of all time.

Williams' illustrious career spanned from the mid-1970s to 2014. He began performing stand-up comedy in San Francisco and Los Angeles, even launching several comedy albums. Williams quickly rose to fame when he captivated audiences with his portrayal of the alien Mork in the ABC sitcom "Mork & Mindy".

Aside from his impressive TV work, he exhibited an equally laudable portfolio in films. His first leading film role was in "Popeye" (1980) and later won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Good Will Hunting" (1997). He earned additional Oscar nominations for his performances in "Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987), "Dead Poets Society" (1989), and "The Fisher King" (1991). He also lent his unique voice to several animated films like "Aladdin" (1992), "Robots" (2005), and the "Happy Feet" series.

Beyond his on-screen brilliance, Williams was adored in family films such as "Hook" (1991), "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993), "Jumanji" (1995) and the "Night at the Museum" trilogy (2006–2014). His wide-ranging roles testify to his sheer acting prowess in both dramatic and comedic genres alike.
