David Strathairn, born on January 26, 1949, in San Francisco, California, is an American actor known for his influential roles both on stage and screen. Strathairn's illustrious career, which has spanned from 1979 to present, initiated with his acting debut in fellow Williams College graduate John Sayles' film "Return of the Secaucus 7" in 1980. His contributions to film include roles in "Matewan," "City of Hope," "A League of Their Own," "Sneakers," "The Firm," "L.A. Confidential," and "Limbo," amongst many others.

Strathairn gained significant recognition for his role as journalist Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck," a performance that led to his nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in notable films such as "The Bourne Ultimatum," "The Bourne Legacy," Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland," and Guillermo del Toro's "Nightmare Alley."

Beyond his film career, Strathairn made an impressive mark on television. Beginning his TV career in the soap opera "Search for Tomorrow" in 1984, he went on to play diverse roles in shows like "The Sopranos," "Alphas," "The Blacklist," "Billions," and "The Expanse." His portrayal in the HBO television film "Temple Grandin" received a Primetime Emmy Award win and a Golden Globe Award nomination.

Strathairn attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, California, and later graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1970. Here, he established the foundational relationships with fellow actor Gordon Clapp and director John Sayles, which have significantly influenced his career.

Being the second of three children of a physician father and a nurse mother, Strathairn carries Scottish ancestry through his paternal grandfather and Native Hawaiian lines through his paternal grandmother.
