About Me | Six months after graduating from Ramona I got my notice for the draft, so I went downtown and enlisted in the army, and selected demolition technician and duty in Germany. Went to Ft Leonardwood, MO for basic engineer school, then was selected for nuclear tech school at Ft Belvior, VA, then shipped to Germany. Had a ball in Germany. After 2 yrs my whole unit was shipped to Vietnam. I was not too happy about that, but what can you do about it. We built a battalion contonement with living/fighting bunkers around the perimiter. Our first fire fight was 2 months after we arrived. We were loaded to the teeth with demolition gear around the whole battalion. After 3 attempts to breech our burm, they quit trying. I was wounded while on a mission supporting the 101st airborne. The landing zone was not secure, and we took fire while trying to land on huey helicopters. My crew was loaded down with explosive gear. Several of the choppers blew up while still in the air. After a period of 15 minutes, that felt like hours, they left the area. We lost over 30 men that day. I received a wound to my left thigh, but wasn't bad, just a lot of blood. I returned to the states as a staff sergeant and assigned desk duty at Roanoke, VA, to make a long story short, I left the army to study for my associate degree in Lawrence, KS. After a year and half I had enough, then joined the navy to finish out my 20 yrs for retirement. My first assignment was working on the flight deck of USS Nimitz as a catapult captain launching aircraft. The job was dangerous, but promotions were fast. I ended up at NAS Memphis for retirement in 1988. Went to Oahu for 6 months, then came back to Muskogee, OK to work for the VA regional office. After 3 years I had enough grief from office politics that I resigned and moved down here to Talihina OK...and that brings us in full circle. I think that should answer some questions...
