Carolyn was a registered nurse and earned a master's degree in public health from John Hopkins University. She was a search professional with the Larimer County Search & Rescue Team, a senior mountaineering instructor, and a certified wilderness EMT. She lost her life on her 57th birthday while descending from the summit of the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland.
