About Me | For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being "Christian" or to being part of Christianity. It's simply impossible for me to "belong" to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else. … In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen." I am standing upon the seashore. A ship,at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and strength.I stand and watch her until,at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each outher. Then, someone at my side says "There , she is gone" Gone where? Gone from my sight. That is all.She is just as large mast.hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And , she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me-- not her.And just at the moment when someone says, "There , she is gone,"there are outher eyes watching her coming , and other voices ready to take up the glad, shout, "HERE SHE COMES!" And that is dying ... Henry Van Dyke“Tell them about how you're never really a whole person if you remain silent, because there's always that one little piece inside you that wants to be spoken out, and if you keep ignoring it, it gets madder and madder and hotter and hotter, and if you don't speak it out one day it will jump up and punch you in the mouth from the inside.” Audre Lorde "I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false and to occur my own abhorrence." Frederick Douglass Been married 46 years to Harvey Wagner (didn't change my name), 2 sons, 2 grandsons and one granddaughter. My parents were Democrats. Mom, being a warbride from Italy, saw the repercussions of fascist government and embraced democracy with a vengence. She also embraced compassion and fairness in our political system. She became a citizen in 1952 and voted in her first presidential election for Adlai Stevenson, a hero of the people in her eyes. in 1956, my parents were delegates to the State Democratic Convention in Fresno and took me with them for a day. It was interesting...did I understnd? No, but I saw the passion that was stirred. As I stated high school in 1960, I had a bumper sticker on my binder "Kennedy and Johnson". Boy, did I take a lot of crap at school for that, but again I learned how passions are stirred by politics. When Kennedy was assasinated, the first real tragedy in my life, I guess my passion reached its crescendo...I was there..full blooded Democrat. I still cry for that tragedy. King's assassination later, then held more meaning of the injustice in the country. I cast my first vote for Bobby Kennedy, then watched him assasinated. I supported the strikes of Caeer Chavez, and boycotted lettuce for years!! I campaigned for McGovern to watch him turned aside. In 1976, I was appointed to the Democratic Central Committee of Tuolumne County, fundraising and lots of voter registration for over 8 years. Twice I co-chaired the election and reelection of John Garamendi to the CA Assembly. Meanwhile, husbnd, father, brother, sister all union members...proud of their work and the benefits received from being members and paying those dreaded dues! Teaching high school invited activism. When I started real estate I was in conservative land. Did I sit by quietly....NOOOO. I was labeled the only Democrat Realtor in the county...not true, but most afraid to speak their real conscience. They hate my bumper stickers , and as they were pulled off, I'd just contribute more and get another one. Every election cycle I helped in some way. Worked like madman when Clinton was running...registration, phone banks, policy seminars. Billy was my President...love and respect him and Hillary even more today. And then came Barak Obama looking to make much needed change that didn't reflect my life as much as my children's lives. I only saw what improvemnet could be in their lives to get this man elected...financial in some part, but mostly for the moral integrity of this country that was fast disappearing. I do think he has given us that hope...change is a tough road, but we are making strides everyday. I will fight daily against the injustices in this country and world, I will pray for no more wars and work diligently to safeguard our Mother Earth. So in a very long...(read more) |
