About Dana “transitioned into light and back to Spirit.”
Like the rest of you, I’ve lost a friend. Every year on my birthday she would remind me that I was 14 days OLDER than she... and she’d crack up about it! I’ll miss that.
Dana and I went to the same elementary, middle and high school. We never palled around, spent the night at each other’s houses, etc. but we had classes together and were friendly.
We saw each other at reunions and talked on the phone when I was helping to plan them.
Fast forward to about 15 years ago... we reconnected through Facebook. Dana was a court reporter and left California in 2006 to work in DC.
She really loved working for the US House of Representatives. It was hard work but she was able to watch as things unfolded in our nation. She was really firm in her beliefs, and one area was politics. Working in DC gave her a birds-eye view into policies and politics that effect us all. We talked, sometimes just through messenger, about the things she saw and heard. She was thrilled to meet Richard Gere, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton and many others through her work... if only she could have met a few other favorites -Ralph Fiennes, Joe Montana (and her 49ers) Steve Perry, Josh Groban...oh and we can’t forget the British Royals....well, she did meet some but it was through work or a chance meeting.
Dana also loved animals- if she could she’d rescue every animal around her. She was very protective of the strays she cared for and would stick around for long periods of time just to glimpse them and make sure they were okay.
She had a wicked sense of humor and loved to laugh. She would see a post that I saw “The Jacks” play and she would text, call or message wanting to know who from high school was there, was it fun, etc. Same with the EDC Fair, where I would always see people we grew up with. She would always asked after fellow classmates, wanted to know who was around, what they were up to, etc. At one point we had a small Facebook group of ladies and we would chat about our lives- she really enjoyed that group.
She did grow lonely in DC and somewhat disillusioned and wanted to reconnect with her roots so she moved to Georgia to be near her brother. She cherished the time they spent together but was homesick for Northern California. I tried to plan a visit around my kid’s almost year round sports and a time when the SF Giants would be playing the Braves, but it never happened. Dana got a kick out of my kids and their antics. She often commented on the fact that my kids were able to travel a lot and see our country- she thought that was awesome. She and Hunter became FB friends and Hunter has already said she misses Dana’s posts and comments.
She had planned on moving back early in 2020 and then COVID hit. She had everything packed up, the moving truck was booked, her car had been shipped out to CA and I had sent her links to apartments to check out...and then everything changed. Dana was already dealing with liver issues, but she went to the ER because she wasn’t feeling well ... well you know the rest.
Dana was ready to go. She was in a lot of pain. She had made peace with this life and was connecting with her next stop.
I will miss her. As I type this I still can hear her laugh. We talked a lot in this last month, I just wish I knew our last call was going to be our last.
