The state Senate officially confirmed Thursday veteran prosecutor Barry Barnette to lead the Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Barnette was the principal deputy solicitor under former solicitor and current U.S. House Rep. Trey Gowdy and was named the acting solicitor by former Gov. Mark Sanford on Dec. 31 when Gowdy vacated the solicitor's post. Barnette will serve the remainder of Gowdy's term, which runs through January 2013.
Barnette was confirmed by a unanimous vote of the S.C. Senate Thursday afternoon.
Barnette said Derrick Bulsa, who's been with the office for almost 20 years, will serve as his deputy.
“Other than that, there won't be many changes,” Barnette said. “We will keep doing what we've been doing to prosecute cases and bring justice to the Seventh Circuit.”
Barnette expressed his appreciation to the residents and legislative delegations of Spartanburg and Cherokee counties for their support during the confirmation process. Barnette served as a principal deputy solicitor under Gowdy since January 2001. Prior to that, he served as a magistrate court judge.
He's a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law and received a bachelor's degree in education from Marshall University.
In 2006, Barnette earned the Ernest F. Hollings Award for Excellence in state prosecution, the state's top honor in the state for prosecution work.
He also received the Outstanding Traffic Safety Prosecutor Award from the National Association of Prosecutor Coordinators in 2006 and was the Department of Public Safety's Prosecutor of the Year in 2007.
During the past several years, he has produced the “Case Law on Driving Cases in South Carolina” booklet for judges, attorneys and law enforcement officers.
