About Me | Jake: [Big Jake and Sam Sharpnose try to get a hotel room] Give us a room. Hotel desk clerk: The dog is all right, but, ah, we do not allow Indians. Jake: Do you allow Eskimos? Hotel desk clerk: Yes. Jake: Well, he's an *Eskimo*. My Religion: A Rant i'm a buddhist. i'm also a catholic, but i am not a theist. i'm not exactly an atheist, but i am certainly a skeptic. for me, the writings of lao tzu and the bagadavita are my primary sources of spiritual solace -- along with the dhammapada and the platform sutra. the heart sutra is also a great poem. not that any of this is anyone's business -- my spirituality is just that -- mine. i don't wear it on my sleeve, because unlike most "christians" i actually believe what i believe and i have spent long hard years looking for the truth -- not just taking as "truth" what some dolt says just because mommy and daddy says to. it's important to have a spiritual path and practice. christianity is neither. jesus's worst enemies are "christians." just as muhammed's worst enemies are "muslims." fundamentalist christians are the worst, not only do they go through life with a shoebox on their head, they try and stick the same shoebox on everyone's head too -- you can, i suppose, be a good person and be a christian, but in my experience people who put being "christian" before being a good person are assholes. here at the newspaper every week we get bitched out by "church" people for not running enough free adevertising for them -- the most hateful people i have met in my 50 years have all considered themselves "good christians." so it is no coincidence that to me, that phrase is synonymous with "asswipe." religions are like martial arts. fundamentalists (protestant and catholic) are like ATA TKD -- very dogmatic, very simplistic, and not really very practical. at the other end of the scale you have episcopalians, liberation theology catholics, unity and unitarians, which are like MMA -- whatever works. but in the end, all organized religion is flawed. organized religion is simply a money making venture. period. the organization, rather it is the Vatican or the SBC, exists merely to make money. about the only christians i have found that are worth a shit have been episcopalians, catholics, and unitarians. there are exceptions of course, i have known decent baptists and asshole episcopalians, but as a rule those congregations tend to be intelligent and tolerant and enlightened -- things you can never accuse fundamentalists of being! "judge not, lest ye be judged." funny how fundame...(read more) |
