What is Kenneth W. Benner known for?

Born on May 6, 1904, in Piqua, Ohio, Kenneth Wachter Benner became a decorated officer in the United States Marine Corps, eventually reaching the rank of Brigadier General. A Piqua High School alumnus before attending the United States Naval Academy, Benner led a notable career of service from 1926 to 1956.

After graduating from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Benner was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. During his career, he was highly active in the academy orchestra and even worked as a news reporter for the Piqua Daily Call.

Benner held command in the 1st Provisional Antiaircraft Artillery Group and the 3rd Defense Battalion. He took part in crucial battles of World War II, including the Defense of Pearl Harbor, the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the Battle of Okinawa. He was a recipient of distinguished military awards such as the Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart.

Later in his career, Benner was deployed to places such as Haiti and Nicaragua. Back in the United States, Benner served in capacities at the Marine Corps Base San Diego and the Naval Station Great Lakes. His commitment to expanding his knowledge and expertise in artillery led him to the Army Coast Artillery School at Fort Monroe, Virginia, where he completed a one-year course.

Kenneth Wachter Benner passed away on September 10, 1975, in Columbus, North Carolina leaving behind a legacy of formidable service and leadership in the United States Marine Corps.
