Freight kills cycling pair
Two men riding motorcycles were killed instantly at about 3 p.m. Sunday when they were struck by a northbound Southern Pacific freight train just north of the Wellsona crossing between Paso Robles and San Miguel.
The victims were identified as George Thomas Wainwright, 24, of San Laurence Terrace, San Miguel and Edward Lee Butler, 25, of New Almaden, near San Jose.
Sheriff’s deputies said the men were struck from behind and apparently did not hear the train coming. They were wearing helmets and it was raining at the time, deputies said.
The bodies were taken to Kuehl Chapel in Paso Robles.
