About Wesley A. Churchill of West Valley passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. He was 95.

Born in Boston, NY, Wes graduated from Houghton College in 1937 with a degree in education and science. He also did graduate work at the University of Buffalo, Canisius College, Cornell University, Fredonia State College, Geneseo College, Niagara University and St. Bonaventure University.

While a student at Houghton, Wes was a volunteer teacher at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in nearby Centerville. He then taught high school science in Wilson and also served as vice principal and acting principal there.

He returned to West Valley in 1946 to work in the family business, Churchills Hardware, which he later bought.

Wes began teaching science again at Arcade High School in 1959 and retired from the Pioneer Central School District as a physics teacher in 1980.

He also had a passion for serving others and the Lord. Between 1974 and 1997, Wes and his wife June made dozens of mission trips to Haiti, helping to drill water wells, start honeybee colonies, and establish churches, schools and a medical clinic with Haiti Gospel Mission. The Haiti Gospel Mission Clinic has begun construction of the new Churchill Lab, which they hope to dedicate in his memory in Spring 2012.

Wes was a longtime member of the West Valley Volunteer Fire Company, serving as chaplain for a number of years. He taught a Sunday school class at St. Pauls United Methodist Church in West Valley for decades and was a trustee and missions chairman.

A son of the late Frank and Nellie Churchill, and brother of the late Ames (Norma) Churchill, Wes was the beloved husband of the former June Austin for nearly 74 years. He is also survived by two daughters, Judy (David) Lawton of Collins and Jacque (George) Neudeck of West Valley; grandchildren Kim Lawton of Arlington, Virginia, Holly Lawton of Collins, Ed (Robyn) Lawton of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Dr. Julie Neudeck of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and Jason (Rebecca) Neudeck of Boston, New York; and his great-grandchildren, Tom, Zac, Eddy and Emmalee Lawton of Lake Wylie and Nathan, Hannah, John and Michaela Neudeck of Boston.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pauls United Methodist Church in West Valley. Memorials may be made to Haiti Gospel Mission/New Churchill Lab via June Churchill, or for St. Pauls United Methodist Church.

Classmate Memories

John Kosmerl '72 said:

I had physics right after gym class. (Yes, we used to take showers after gym class) We were often a little late and Mr Churchill would send us to the office to get a pass.
One day I just sat down and advised Mr. Churchill that he knew that they would give us a pass and all that would happen is that I would miss more of his class.
The next day Mr. Cheni came up and gave me a book of signed passes and told me that the next time Mr. Churchill asked for a pass to give him one.
