Services for John S. Rix, retired Arcade police sergeant, town councilman and justice, were held Friday in Hunters Creek Bible Baptist Church in Holland.

Mr. Rix, who was born in Buffalo, died Tuesday at his home in Arcade after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 53.

He graduated from Pioneer Central High School in 1970 and enlisted in the Army. He served in Vietnam as an image interpreter. He later was stationed at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, where he also worked a civilian job as a veterinarian's assistant.

Mr. Rix graduated from Oklahoma Farrier's College and took several courses at Geneseo and Brockport State colleges.

He joined the Arcade Police Department in December 1975, retiring as the department's sergeant in 2001.

He served two terms as an Arcade councilman and was a town justice for three years. He was a member of the Arcade Fire Department and also an emergency medical technician with its rescue squad. He was a life member of the Henderschott-Manness Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Arcade.

Mr. Rix enjoyed riding and training horses and, for the past eight years, was involved with driving and showing draft horses in New York and Florida. He was a former assistant leader with the Saddle Busters 4-H Club in Eagle.

An Eagle Scout, he was involved in scouting for many years.

In 1991, he received the New York State Press Association's "Guardian of the First Amendment" Award for his defense of open government. He received the Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award earlier this year.

Survivors include his wife, the former Judith Phair Kessler; his mother, Arlene Rix Bailey; two daughters, Heather Rix-Packard and Nicole Kimpel; two stepdaughters, Karla Rendell and Cheryl Whitaker; and two brothers, Philip and Kevin. (Obituary courtesy of BuffaloNews.com)
