About Me | I was born, grew up, and to this day, I'm still here! Hooray! I am an optimist, and I try to live according to my ideals. I am still trying to change the world for the better. Lissa Douglas, M.A., L.P.C.- A.T., got her Bachelor of Arts from the New School for Social Research in 1977 and her Master’s Degree in Art Therapy from the Vermont College of Norwich University in 1984. She attended Bennington College in her junior year and Penn State University in her freshman and sophomore years. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Board Certified Art Therapist and Licensed Art Therapist who works full time with adolescents and their families in the juvenile justice system for the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County and maintains a small private practice doing play therapy, art therapy, and filial therapy with 3-8 year olds and thier parents. She also teaches parenting skills using the Love and Logic program. She has 8 years experience as an Art Therapist working in psychiatric hospitals with many different populations, 5 years experience as an Art Therapist and Counselor in the schools, and 10 years at MHMRA. She has taught Child and Adolescent Development, Introduction to Psychology, and Study Skills at Houston Community College System. She was made an Honorary Judge of the Houston Science and Engineering Fair in 1993. She is a member of the American Art Therapy Association and is a past Secretary of the South Texas Art Therapy Association. She has done extensive volunteer work. In 1995 she created a charity event called Pumped Up On Art which became an annual event for three years. PUOA solicited high-heeled shoes from celebrities, which were then made into sculptures by gay artists and auctioned in the kick-off event of the Houston Pride Parade. Lily Thomlin’s pump sculpture brought close to $400. City Councilwomen as well as local celebrities and politicians submitted shoes for the event, and then-Texas Governor Ann Richards submitted a signed copy of her book, Straight From The Heart, which was auctioned off as well. PUOA netted over $6,000 and benefitted three local charities. In 1992 she served as Chair-M of the Gulf Coast Mensa’s Awards for Gifted Children, in which she broadened the contest beyond the traditional verbal essay to include awards for entrants who chose to answer the contest question in song, story, sculpture, video, music, and 2-dimentional artwork. Additionally, the awards in the different categories were each judged in 8 different age groups. Having more than one first prize was quite unusual at the time. In both 1990 and 1991 she served as the coordinator of the international portion of the annual event, Christmas and Hanukkah In Montrose. Lissa currently maintains two websites: http://www.HoustonChildTherapist.com describes her professional services. http://www.CreativeLesbianVideo.com is a site where lesbians can upload their creative efforts in the short film genre.
