After completion of high school, James joined the United States Army on September 11, 2001. He served three tours overseas, two to Afghanistan and the third tour was Iraq that included the initial invasion of Falluja. For his service, James was awarded two Bronze Stars, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant.

James was the honoree at the 2019 Warrior Benefit Concert, and the inventor of the "Barrett Ball", a virtually indestructible dog toy that was named after James' service dog, Barrett.
