I like Evan Goldstein's "The Impoverishment of Political Rhetoric: A Scholar Quantifies Creeping Anti-intellectualism" in The Chronicle Review Section of the Chronicle of Higher Education, October 3, 2008. Goldstein describes Elvin T. Lim's book The Anti-Intellectual Presidency: The Decline of Presidential Rhetoric From George Washington to George W. Bush (Oxford) in which Lim applies the Flesch Readibility formula to presidential rhetoric . The two-page Q&A format of the article reviews the speech of Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and populist Sarah Palin. The research argues that "the degeneration of presidential rhetoric has continued unabated for 200 years and therefore we have every reason that it will continue." Today's media format fosters this, and if the trend continues, it is projected, in 120 years the State of the Union address will be on the level of a 5th grade comic book.
