Recognized as Outstanding

On April 17, 2008, five students from the Penn Hills School District were honored at the Tribune Review's Total Media Outstanding Young Citizens awards banquet at Churchill Country Club. In all, 89 students from 18 school districts were recognized. Each student received a certificate and accolades for their accomplishments and outstanding character.

Those recognized included Senior Mary Stevens, Junior Melissa Rust, and Sophomores Courtney Greenway, Kayley McMahon, and Carly Otte. After the dinner, 10 Gold Medal winners were announced. These ten were recognized by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review as the best of the best and awarded gold medal distinction. Carly was one of the ten chosen to receive this honor.

Carly was nominated to be an Outstanding Young Citizen by her Honors Algebra II teacher, Mrs. Brooke Hack, based on her academic performance. She said she was very honored and surprised to receive the Gold Medal Award. "It means a lot to be recognized for my hard work and effort," Carly said, "but really I was recognized for doing what I love to do." She went on to say that all of the students who were nominated were deserving, and it must have been difficult for the judges to pick only 10 winners from such accomplished students.

Among Carly's academic achievements are honor roll student in accelerated and honors level courses, first place in the Allegheny County PTA Reflections in the Arts competition, first through third placements at the Linton Middle School Sci

Only the top ten highest scoring teams are chosen in the entire state, and those teams will compete at the Ford/AAA Auto Skills hands-on final held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Two of the seven Penn Hills students have advanced and will be competing in the state finals held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology on May 15, 2008. The two students who will be representing Penn Hills High School are Senior William (Charlie) Hayes and Junior Christopher Smith.

Computational Linguistics Olym

Congratulations to Penn Hills Senior Colin Newby for advancing to the finals of the 2008 North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO) competition. Colin competed against high school students from across Canada and the United States. A total of 17 Penn Hills students competed and were proctored by High School Gifted Coordinator Joshua Willy.

The competition took place in two rounds -- an Open round on February 5th and an Invitational round on March 11th. The Open competition involved 763 students participating at 14 university locations and 65 high school and home school centers in the United States and Canada. The top 115 from the Open competition participated in the Invitational round.

Students who competed in the Computational Linguistics Olympiad solved challenging problems using data from a variety of languages and formal systems the students have never learned.

Colin finished 6th in the state and 54th overall. "This was a considerable accomplishment considering the scope of this competition," Willy said. He was also the only student from Penn Hills to make it to the finals or Invitational round.

Though not yet widely familiar to the general public, computational linguistics is a rapidly emerging field with applications in such areas as search engine technologies, machine translation, and artificial intelligence.

The U.S. program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Google, and Cambridge University Press. Similar programs have take

Performances will be in the Thomas A. Bond Auditorium at the Senior High School on Thursday, April 24, 2008 (Senior Citizen Night); Friday, April 25, 2008; Saturday, April 26, 2008; Friday, May 2, 2008; and Saturday, May 3, 2008. All performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Penn Hills NJROTC Compete

On March 6, 2008, five teams from Penn Hills NJROTC competed in the NJROTC National Academic Exam (NAE) against 1,500 other high school teams from around the United States. The results were released on April 3rd.

Penn Hills Team 3 consisting of Cadets Andre Bennett, Melissa Boby, Eric Gumkowski, Stephen Sloane, and Eric Townsend placed 236th out of 1,505 teams or in the top 16 percent nationally. They were followed closely by Team 1 consisting of Cadets Michael Crivaro, Samantha DeShong, Joshua Rockman, Nathan Stockman, and Gabriel Torres, who finished 276th or in the top 18 percent. The lowest place finish for Penn Hills students was 1,023rd (64 percent).

These results are significant because the event measures cadets' knowledge against some of the top schools in the nation, and the best and brightest participate in the competition. Against schools in the northeast, Penn Hills ranked 16th, 23rd, 79th, 92nd, and 113th, respectively, out of 176 teams that competed.
