Glenn Makley
Class of 1968
Marine Corps, 4 Years
I was MOS 2841/47 Ground Radio Repairman/with Limted Cryptographic Capability I was an electronics technician who could examine a cryptograph radio and determine which of it's various encased sections was malfunctioning and perform a section replacement. I was not permitted to be knowledgeable of it's exact componentry. That was a higher pay grade than mine, so to speak. During my entire time on active duty I never actually performed that function, but I sure worked on a bunch of radio's. Some of them in tank's, ONTOS, or jeeps and trucks.
I went to four different schools, the first of which, in order to graduate, it was required that each individual take a cardboard box full of electronic components, capacitors, resistors, and inductors, and asemble them on a pegboard so that they became a functioning communications radio that would send and receive to three different locations. At which time an instructor would examine the performance, electronically, and if the radio did not achieve certain levels of sensitivity and selectivity, you failed the exam. From memory. No notes.
