About Rich Bellino (70)
Rich Bellino remembered as ‘great partner’ for La Vista
Well-known La Vista businessman Rich Bellino was dedicated to giving back to the city and those in need.
Bellino, 63, died Friday after an allergic reaction to a bee or wasp sting.
Since 1989, the City of La Vista’s keno game has been operated by Bellino.
“He has been a great partner and he’s obviously run a very successful game, but maybe more importantly, he’s run a very honest game. We could trust him as our operator down there completely,” said La Vista Mayor Doug Kindig.
La Vista City Councilman Kelly Sell worked with Bellino since his first contract with the city as keno operator. When Bellino took over the La Vista Keno building, he cleaned up the development and ran a good operation, Sell said.
“He was a no-nonsense businessman with a heart of gold,” Sell said. “I think he liked to put off a persona of being a rough guy to a lot of people, but really, he would give you the shirt off his back if he could.”
Bellino also made financial contributions to the city from civic projects to the city’s 50th anniversary celebration.
He willingly contributed to city projects, going above and beyond what was necessary, Sell said.
“His efforts to give back to the community have been tremendous,” Kindig said. “He donated an awful lot of his money to make us a better city. He was under no obligation to give back.”
He was a frequent supporter of the La Vista Community Foundation. Bellino had a sincere investment in the community, said Leah Hoins, executive director of the foundation.
“He really just wanted the funds that he donated to go to doing something good,” Hoins added. “Wherever the need was, was where he wanted his funds to go.”
Bellino would often purchase sponsorships at foundation events such as the Gala fundraiser and golf outing, Hoins said. But he always made sure spaces at table or spots on the golf team went to city employees.
“He really had a lot of respect for the employees of the city and what they did,” she said. “Rich was a really precious community member and we’re really going to miss him. He was a very faithful contributor to the community and a real friend of the La Vista Community Foundation.”
Outside of work, Bellino was devoted to his family.
“He loved his children and his family. He would do anything for them,” Sell said. “He loved his friends and I think he would do anything for them, as well.”
Bellino’s death is a loss for the community.
“Our hearts definitely go out to his family,” Kindig said. “He was a big part of our city. We’re going to miss him.”
Bellino was preceded in death by his son, Dominic “Nick” Bellino, his father, Richard A. Bellino and sister Kathy Bellino. His survivors include wife, Mary Kay; children, Jared Bellino (Erin) and Jamie Bellino; grandchildren, Aubrey, Alainna and Andrew; mother Dorothy; brother Donald Bellino (Valerie); sisters Sandra Bellino and Margaret Bunde (Scott).
A funeral was Tuesday at Heafey-Hoffman-Dworak-Cutler West Center Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Siena/Francis House or Shriners Hospital.
