Barton, 106, of Kearney died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Prairie View Gardens in Kearney.Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Riverside Cemetery at Gibbon with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by Rob Morris Lodge 46 of Kearney and military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 749 of Kearney. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements. He was born Jan. 23, 1900, in Papillion to Robert and Ava (Sage) Barton. On Oct. 30, 1946, he married Dorothy Sutter in Des Moines, Iowa. She died in 2000. Survivors include his niece, Susan Reiber of Gibbon: and nephews, Richard Rodgers Jr. of Gibbon, Robert Barton of Chesapeake, Va., and Richard Barton of Twin Falls, Idaho. He grew up in Papillion and was a 1918 graduate of Papillion High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, from 1918 to 1919, and was stationed in New Guinea with the Navy Seabees during World War II. After his honorary discharge in 1945 and his marriage, he lived in San Francisco, where he was an engineer for Pacific Bell Telephone Co. He and his wife retired to Saratoga, Calif., and enjoyed worldwide travel. He also piloted his own plane. In 1997, they moved to Kearney, where they were the first residents of Regency Retirement Residence. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kearney and a 67-year A.F. & A.M. member of Masonic Lodge 120 in San Francisco. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Memorials are suggested to the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth |
