Ayer was born in 1875 in Nebraska, the 5th of 7 living children of Pembroke Ayer and Giorgiana Hall. Bertha married three times. Her first marriage in 1895 was to Omaha lawyer Charles Lincoln Hover with whom she had her only two children: daughter Sylvia E. Hover, and son Vivian Ayer Hover. She and Charlie got a divorce, and by 1905 she married a second time - to newspaper correspondent Develan Pearce. It is unclear (yet) whether Mr. Pearce passed away or they got a divorce, but by 1925, Bertha was married for a third time - to Joseph Willard Newman, a lawyer who was living in Chicago, Illinois. They were in Mobile Alabama when she died in February 1935.
