About | 1LT Mark Noziska (2004) U.S. Army KIA Aug. 30 2010 at Malajat, Afghanistan COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - First Lt. Mark A. Noziska, 24, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Papillion and Grand Island, died Monday, Aug. 30 2010, at Malajat, Afghanistan. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael F. McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Nebraska National Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. The family requests that at the visitation, as well as the funeral service, you wear Army shirts or uniforms or Nebraska attire in Mark's memory. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. First Lt. Noziska was born Oct. 15, 1985, at Grand Island to William Jr. and Doreatha "Dee" (Usasz) Noziska. Survivors of the immediate family include his parents of Grand Island; one brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Katheryn Noziska of Grand Island; a sister, Tracy Noziska and Todd Joseph of LaVista; grandparents, Tony and Ruby Usasz of Grand Island, and Ruth Noziska of Grand Island; and nieces and nephews, Michael, Megan, and Matthew Noziska, and Calvin and Chay Joseph. Mr. Noziska grew up in Grand Island until his family moved to Papillion in 2000. He attended Papillion Junior High and graduated from Papillion LaVista High School in 2004. He was recognized in Who's Who (2001-02), and was selected to represent Nebraska in People to People in 2002, thus traveling to Australia and New Zealand. He was selected as Mr. Monarch of 2004. He enlisted in the Army National Guard as a private on March 11, 2004. He attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in 2004. He graduated from Advanced Individual Training Oct. 27, 2005, and was assigned as a Chemical Operations Specialist in the 754th Reconnaissance/Decontamination Company in Omaha. In 2005 he was named Nebraska Soldier of the Year and competed at the national competition, finishing as first runner-up. He attended UNO/ROTC program and graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2008. He transferred to the active duty Army in December 2008 and was promoted to second lieutenant. He graduated from the Infantry Officer Basic Course in August 2009 and from Airborne School in October 2009. He was assigned as a platoon leader in Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment in Fort Carson, Colo. He was deployed to Afghanistan in July of this year. Mark was an avid Nebraska football fan and was a dedicated Army man. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill Sr. and Marie Noziska, and great-grandparents, Cecil and Mabel Hallner, and Frank and Josephine Noziska.
