From the Omaha World Herald Newspaper;
A pleasure to coach and a pleasure to know.
That’s how Wayne State softball coach Shelli Manson described former player Kaiti Williams.
Williams, 22, died Friday morning. She was living in Dakota City, Nebraska, and had been working at the Siouxland National Bank after graduating in May.
Her heart stopped, her mother, Mary Ann, said.
“She was a kid you really enjoyed having around,” Manson said. “Besides being an excellent player, she was just an all-around good person.”
Williams also was a standout softball player at Papillion-La Vista South, where both her parents had worked. Her father, Bob, now teaches in the math department at Omaha Brownell-Talbot.
Mary Ann said Kaiti had “a little bit” of a heart issue a few years ago.
“It seemed that it was over,” she said.
Her daughter never missed a game in her four-year career at Wayne. She was the honorary captain of The World-Herald’s All-Nebraska Division II softball team in 2014.
This spring, she was named to the Northern Sun’s second team as an outfielder after hitting .399 with seven home runs and 48 RBIs. She led the team in RBIs and doubles (15) while ranking second in runs (42), hits (75) and triples (2).
She finished as the Wildcats’ all-time leader in doubles (52) and RBIs (146). She was second in hits (252) and runs (148) and third in home runs (24). She was also honored in the spring for her academics.
Manson said Williams was an impeccable leader and great mentor to her teammates, who are crushed by her death.
“They are mourning the loss of their friend,” Manson said. “She just had a great personality. She touched every single one of their lives and they are heartbroken.”
Manson said when the team returns to school in a few weeks, it will discuss how it can honor Williams.
Dan Hogan, who coached Williams at Papio South, said she was an excellent student and athlete. Williams, who made The World-Herald’s All-Nebraska team in 2008 and 2010, was a natural at hitting, Hogan said.
As a senior, Williams was one of the state’s most feared power hitters, clubbing eight home runs to lead the Titans to an all-class state record of 27. She hit .506 (42 of 83) with seven doubles and a team-high 35 RBIs.
“She was just a very happy-go-lucky girl,” Hogan said. “It is just so sad. We are all kind of shocked.”
Kaiti’s parents said they want her to be remembered as someone who had a strong faith and was a strong person who loved God and her family.
She went on a mission trip to South Africa two years ago, and they would like donations to be sent to that charity in lieu of flowers. That information will be released later.
In addition to her parents, Williams is survived by her fiance, Tyler Hohenstein, who played baseball at Wayne, her sister Kelley Barnes and brothers Joe Forde and Ben Williams.
