Herbert Herman Lienemann was born on November 10, 1915, at the family farmhouse south of Papillion and was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Papillion on December 12, 1915. He has been a lifelong member of First Lutheran and a resident of Papillion.
He was the first of six sons born to Arthur & Dorathea Lienemann. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, his mother and father and three brothers, Marvin, Arthur and Donald. Surviving brothers are Delmar and Paul Lienemann. Herb was confirmed on May 25, 1930. He attended Bell School for eight years and graduated from Papillion High school in 1933. He lettered in baseball and basketball as a junior and senior. He went on to attend winter courses at the Agricultural College at Lincoln, Nebraska, while helping his father with farming. Herb helped organize the Sarpy County Softball League at Richfield, Nebraska, in 1941 and managed the church team and played two nights a week. In 1941 Herb was drafted to the Army and served four years, three months during World War ll. After basic training at Camp Grant, Illinois, he worked in a Hospital at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He married Helen Cordes, daughter of Edward and Marie (Guthard) Cordes on June 6, 1943. They moved to Dixon, Missouri, where they lived until August of 1944, when he was transferred to Camp Barkley, Texas, for Field Hospital training. While in Texas their first child was born. Herb was transferred to a hospital ship and made four trips across the ocean to England and France, bringing home wounded patients. He left the ship on September 1, 1945, and was discharged November 3, 1945.
Herb and Helen were blessed with five children, Kathy, Larry, Gene, Dennis and Carol. Also surviving him are his grandchildren Tim, Aaron, Jeff, Mike, Sarah, Adam, Alison, Nicole, Jason, Jenni. He has 10 great grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors as well as all those who "adopted" Herb and Helen as their family. Herb & Helen farmed two and a half miles south of Papillion and they were involved in 4-H, sports and band parents with their children. Herb served as Chairman of the congregation in 1953, an anniversary year for the church, and held other offices as well as served as usher and sang with the choir for over 50 years.
Herb served on the Papillion Cemetery Board from 1950 to 2002 and helped to organize and manage a Farmers Union Coop Buying Association. He served as President of the Papillion Rural Fire Protection District from 1957 to 1982 helping to reorganize and get fire protection for the farming area after three very disastrous fires. He was also a member of the American Legion Club in Springfield, Nebraska.
After losing his right hand in a corn picker accident in 1959, he worked 24 years as a custodian for Platteview Schools and District 66 Schools. Herb also served as Chairman of the Papillion Historical Society and helped move Portal School into town in 1995. Herb has been a resident of Papillion Manor for the past year and a half and was very happy to be part of their family and enjoyed the wonderful care that he received.
