Maurice Spencer
Class of 1970
After college Maurice went on to play in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints. AS a premier defensive back he was one of the best at his position, at the time. Subsequently, he received two major spine injuries. An auto accident, in which he was paralyzed. The other injury was due to a violent hit from behind, that broke his neck. After major surgery and rehabilitation, from the car accident, Maurice regained use of his limbs. The violent hit injury required major neck surgery. He retired from professional football, due to these injuries. What is remarkable, is that Maurice put all of his energy into the Spencer Foundation for Spinal Research, in Durham, NC. The foundation works dilligently to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
